A 22-year-old labourer was fatally stabbed in broad daylight on Tuesday afternoon in the Girdharnagar area of Shahibaug, following a dispute over a broken cot. Two brothers have been named as prime accused in the murder and have been booked under charges of assault and homicide.

According to the complaint filed by Vishal Dineshbhai Saraswa, the younger brother of the deceased, Chirag Dineshbhai Saraswa, the incident occurred around 4:30 pm on 3 June near Gate No. 2 of Makubhai’s Chhapra, under the Girdharnagar Bridge.

The dispute reportedly began when Chirag and his friend Manoj Velabhai Parmar, both daily wage workers, attempted to sit on a cot placed outside the home of Jaishankarbhai Kuril. Jaishankarbhai’s wife, Ashaben, objected, citing that the cot was broken, and an argument ensued.

Amid the argument, Ashaben’s sons — Anuj Jaishankarbhai Kuril and Rohan (name changed as he is a minor)— allegedly emerged from the house in anger. They reportedly abused Chirag and assaulted him with sticks. Vishal stated that Anuj held Chirag by force while Rohan produced a dagger from near his shop and stabbed Chirag multiple times, including in the chest, upper shoulder, abdomen, left hand and right wrist.

When Chirag attempted to grab the weapon, Rohan allegedly pulled it away and stabbed him again as he fell to the ground, causing heavy bleeding.

Onlookers, including Vishal and neighbours, rushed Chirag to the Civil Hospital Trauma Centre in Asarwa, where he was declared dead at 5:26 pm. According to the police, Chirag had suffered deep stab wounds on his chest, back, shoulder and hands, leading to extensive blood loss.

Vishal, the complainant, hails from a financially weak family. He and Chirag lived with their mother Manjulaben, a domestic worker, and three siblings. Their father abandoned the family nearly fifteen years ago. Chirag, who was recently married, was expecting his first child with his pregnant wife, Urmilaben.

The Shahibaug Police Station has registered a case of murder and assault under IPC sections relevant to homicide and criminal conspiracy. Both Anuj and Rohan have been detained by police and further investigation is going on

The motive appears to be spontaneous and driven by rage during the confrontation, though police are investigating whether there were prior tensions between the families.
