In yet another case of drug haul at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, two passengers arriving on the same flight from Bangkok were caught in separate incidents with large quantities of hybrid ganja concealed in their baggage, raising serious concerns over the increasing use of the airport as a hub for drug trafficking.

In the first case, Customs officials intercepted a passenger and recovered 4.5 kilograms of hybrid ganja hidden in four separate bags. The accused was immediately placed under arrest. Officials said the drugs had been meticulously concealed to avoid detection during scanning.

In a separate operation, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) apprehended another passenger who had also arrived from Bangkok. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials searched the individual’s baggage and found approximately 10 kilograms of hybrid ganja stashed inside. The contraband was seized, and the accused was taken into custody.

The total market value of the seized drug is ₹14.5 crore.

The back-to-back seizures from the same international flight have triggered alarm bells within enforcement agencies. Both Customs and DRI officials are now probing the possibility of a coordinated drug smuggling network operating through the Bangkok–Ahmedabad air corridor.

Hybrid ganja, a potent variant of cannabis typically cultivated with advanced hydroponic methods, is increasingly being trafficked from Southeast Asia due to its high demand and profitability in the Indian market.

Authorities are now scanning passenger manifests, examining travel patterns, and coordinating with Thai authorities to investigate whether the two arrested individuals are linked or part of a broader syndicate.

Both accused are expected to be produced in court soon, and further legal proceedings under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act are underway.
