World population day: Gujarat paves the way with fertility rate of 1.9
The fertility rate refers to the number of children born for each woman
Bihar with the highest gross fertility rate, Gujarat ranks 9th
India has targeted the fertility rate of 2.1 by 2030 for the country. However, Gujarat has achieved it by 2020 itself, clocking at 1.9 overall, with 1.7 in urban and for rural Gujarat, it is two. The numbers were revealed in the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS).
The fertility rate refers to the number of children born for each woman. In the state, 2022-23 saw 6.64 lakh women opting for birth control devices. 3.08 lakh women opted for female sterilisation surgeries and 1,223 men opted for vasectomy, contributing to stabilising the population growth in the country.
Moreover, to promote population control, the state will celebrate population stability fortnight from July 11 to July 24.
The NFHS-5 had Bihar with the highest gross fertility rate, with three children born to each woman. The top five states with the highest fertility rates were Bihar (3.0), Meghalaya (2.9), Uttar Pradesh (2.4), Jharkhand (2.3), and Manipur (2.2).
While Gujarat’s 1.9 is below the target, and the country’s average of 2.0, it is still the 9th most among the states.
