Women are increasingly taking charge of key administrative and technical positions in the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation, marking a significant shift in a traditionally male-dominated sector.

From depot managers to divisional mechanical engineers (DME), women are now leading operations across the state. At present, around 20 to 25 ST depots including those in Baroda, Dahegam, Viramgam, Kalol, Borsad and Bilimora are being managed by women.

The change reflects a broader transformation within the transport body, where women are no longer limited to roles such as clerks or conductors but are now heading units and handling critical responsibilities.

Women are also making strides in technical fields. They are working as mechanical engineers, technical supervisors, and traffic controllers, overseeing bus inspections, maintenance, and operations.

According to data, out of nearly 8,000 buses in the state, about 2,979 buses now have women conductors. Over the past decade, the presence of women has steadily increased across all levels of the organisation.

Officials say the shift challenges long-standing perceptions that technical and leadership roles in public transport are suited only for men, highlighting growing gender inclusion in the sector.
