Woman’s gold chain worth ₹1.35 lakh stolen during Nagar Yatra on Ahmedabad Foundation Day

A 53-year-old woman has alleged that her gold chain worth ₹1.35 lakh was stolen amid heavy crowds during the Nagar Yatra celebrations near Lal Darwaja on Wednesday afternoon. Karanj police is investigating the theft.
Naranpura resident Rekhaben Dutt stated in her complaint on February 26 that she had gone to Lal Darwaja with her sister-in-law Padmaben Dutt to witness the Nagar Yatra of Goddess Bhadrakali.
As per the police, the two first visited the Bhadrakali temple at Lal Darwaja around 11 am and later proceeded towards the Bahuchar Mata temple. At approximately 1.45 pm, while standing in a dense crowd outside the temple premises, Rekhaben realised that the gold chain she had been wearing was missing.
The chain, weighing around 10 grams, had been purchased in 2002 for ₹6,600. Its current estimated market value is approximately ₹1.35 lakh, the complaint states.
Rekhaben told the police that the chain was stolen without her knowledge in the rush of devotees gathered for the religious procession. Despite searching the immediate area, the ornament could not be traced, following which she approached the police station to lodge a formal complaint.
Police have registered an offence of theft against an unknown accused and initiated an investigation. Officials said CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined, and further inquiries are under way to identify the suspect.
