A late-night altercation in the Juhapura area of Ahmedabad left a woman with a fractured finger, and her husband injured after an alleged assault by a neighbour, police said on Wednesday.

Sayamabanu Sheikh, a resident of Sankalitnagar, has accused one Ayaz Pathan of attacking her and her family members with a stick in the early hours of March 25.

According to police, the incident took place around 2.30 am when the complainant, her husband, mother and brother-in-law were asleep at their residence. The accused allegedly knocked on the door and called her brother-in-law, Arkan, outside, leading to an argument.

When the complainant and her husband stepped out, they found the accused allegedly abusing Arkan. Sayamabanu intervened and questioned the accused, following which he reportedly turned aggressive and began verbally abusing her as well.

Police said that during the altercation, the accused allegedly picked up a stick and began assaulting the complainant and her brother-in-law. As Sayamabanu tried to shield her relative, she sustained injuries to her right hand, which later turned out to be a fracture. Her husband, who intervened to stop the assault, also suffered injuries to his hand, wrist and elbow.

Hearing the commotion, residents gathered at the spot, prompting the accused to flee. The injured woman was taken to the hospital in an 108 ambulance, where doctors confirmed a fracture in her finger. Her husband was shifted to Civil Hospital, Asarwa, for treatment.

In her complaint, Sayamabanu alleged that the accused may have attacked out of personal animosity involving her brother-in-law. The Vejalpur police have registered a case against the accused for assault and causing injuries. Statements of witnesses, including family members and residents, are being recorded.
