Woman steals gold bangles worth ₹5.85 lakh from jewellery shop in Manek Chowk
A woman posing as a customer allegedly stole gold bangles worth ₹5.85 lakh from a jewellery shop in Ahmedabad’s Manek Chowk area on Thursday afternoon, police said.
According to Khadia police, the theft took place between 12.30 pm and 1 pm at ‘Mysha Jewels’, a jewellery store located opposite Gusaparekhni Pol in the busy Manek Chowk market.
Jigar Shaileshbhai Shah, 31, a resident of Satellite and co-owner of the shop, told police that he runs the business in partnership with his cousin Uday Kiritbhai Shah. Four employees work at the establishment.
Police said the woman entered the shop around 12.30 pm while staff members were engaged in stock counting. Described as wearing a navy green T-shirt, grey jeans and a purple scarf, she allegedly asked to see gold bangles.
An employee identified as Gautambhai Prajapati began showing her different designs and paused the stock-counting process to attend to her. After discussing prices for some time, the woman left the store without making a purchase.
The staff later resumed counting the inventory and allegedly discovered that two pairs of gold bangles, comprising four pieces were missing from the stock.
Upon reviewing CCTV footage from the shop, the owners allegedly found that the woman had concealed the bangles under her clothing and walked out unnoticed.
According to the complaint, the stolen ornaments weighed 74.860 grams gross, including 33.760 grams of 22-carat gold and 41.100 grams of core material. The value of the gold ornaments was estimated at ₹5.85 lakh.
The shop owners and employees searched the surrounding Manek Chowk market area for the suspect but were unable to trace her. They subsequently approached the police and lodged a formal complaint.
Khadia police said the complainant and the salesman who attended to the woman would be able to identify her.
