Woman sanitation worker killed by speeding car on BRTS corridor, driver held

In a tragic road accident early on Saturday morning, a 49-year-old woman, Dahiben Prahladbhai Chauhan, lost her life after being struck by a speeding car while crossing the BRTS corridor in Ahmedabad’s Dariapur area. The incident occurred around 6.45 am on June 28 when Dahiben was on her routine walk to register attendance at the Madhupura area point as part of her municipal sanitation duties.
According to the police, the incident took place near Anand Bhuvan when a four-wheeler, coming from Delhi Darwaza, allegedly driven recklessly and negligently, hit Dahiben while she was crossing the road. She sustained grievous injuries to her head, face and body and was thrown against the BRTS railing due to the impact. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene after the collision.
Passersby called for emergency services, and Dahiben was rushed to the trauma ward of Asarwa Civil Hospital in a 108 ambulance. Despite efforts by the medical team, she succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead by the attending doctor at 16.02 hrs on the same day.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim's daughter, Nikita Chauhan, a resident of Dariapur, the case was registered at 'L' Traffic police station under various sections of the BNS and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The accused, identified as Shashak Sanjay Rai, 25, a resident of Naroda, was arrested on Sunday morning, and further investigation in the case is underway.
Civic staff halt work in protest
As a mark of respect and protest, sanitation workers from Madhupura ward suspended their duties on Sunday. Dahiben, who was employed under the municipal sanitation system, was on her way to register attendance when the fatal incident occurred. Workers have demanded stricter traffic enforcement and justice for their deceased colleague. The police have assured that a thorough investigation is in progress and appropriate legal action will be taken.
