Woman gets ₹10 lakh compensation for pressure cooker blast in 1981

Gujarat High Court directed a pressure cooker manufacturer to pay a compensation of ₹10.86 lakh to a woman who lost her eye in a cooker blast that took place 43 years ago.
The victim, 20 year old at the time of the incident in October 1981, suffered severe injuries to the eye. She lost her eye and it had to be replaced with an artificial eye. Her disability was assessed at 40%.
Following this, she filed a case with the civil court in 1984 against the pressure cooker manufacturing company for selling a defective product and demanded a compensation of ₹3.5 lakh.
The city civil court in 1997 ordered a compensation to the company of ₹2.5 lakh with 6% of interest. However, the manufacturer challenged the verdict in the Gujarat High Court, demanding the compensation to be paid by the dealer, claiming that the company was not responsible for the mishap in 1981.
The case against the dealer, was however dropped after he passed away during the pendency of the case.
The high court rejected the manufacturer’s argument and ordered the compensation to the women to be increased to ₹10.86 lakh including the 9% interest from 2020.
The court has ordered the company to transfer the compensation to the victim’s bank account within four weeks.
