Gita Maru, 45, was allegedly assaulted by Rohan and Shailesh Koli and two others in Bhavnagar’s Fulsar village on Nov 26 after she had refused to have her son withdraw the SC/ST atrocities act case filed by her son, Gautam.
Upon refusing the demands of the assailants to convince her son to withdraw the case, the four accused beat Gita with an iron rod, following which she succumbed to her injuries including multiple fractures in the early hours of Nov 27.
Bortalav police has registered a murder, assault, and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and a Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act case in this matter and initiated a probe against the four absconders.
Four cause terror on Bhavnagar streets
Gita was ambushed by the four assailants when she was headed out to a nearby shop to buy a bidi for her husband, Kishor.
To cover up the assault, the accused also broke a CCTV camera of an adjacent shop and even threatened the shop owners, who then shut their shops over the threats.
Following the assault, Kishor and his daughter also showed up at the scene, and they were also abused and threatened by the four accused.
Gita was then shifted to Bhavnagar’s Sir Takhtasinhji hospital in an injured state, where she succumbed to her injuries.
