A 44-year-old woman from New Naroda has filed a complaint alleging that her husband and two brothers-in-law attempted to force her to consume kerosene or another harmful liquid during an assault at their home on Sunday night. Police have registered an FIR and begun an investigation.

As per the FIR lodged by Sunitaben (name changed), she lives with her husband Narendrabhai Amritlal, and their two children in New Naroda. She stated that she has been suffering from prolonged stomach and back ailments for two years and had repeatedly requested proper medical treatment, which allegedly led to disputes within the family.

Thrown out of the house five months ago

Sunitaben alleged that around five months ago, her husband and his younger brothers, Hiteshbhai and Kalpeshbhai, quarrelled with her, beat her, and forced her out of the house. She claimed that Hiteshbhai had assaulted her with a wooden stick before she was sent to her parental home for treatment.

After recovering, she returned home a month later, but her husband allegedly barred her from entering, claiming that they had filed a police complaint to prevent her from staying. Despite this, she continued to live at the residence with her children.

Allegation of sexual coercion by brother-in-law

Sunitaben further alleged that during this period, her brother-in-law Hiteshbhai propositioned her for sexual relations, saying he would “treat her like a queen”, an advance she refused. She claimed that both brothers-in-law frequently pressured her husband to throw her out of the house, causing ongoing mental harassment.

As per the FIR, around 9.30 pm on November 16, Sunitaben’s husband arrived at the house and asked her to pack her belongings and accompany him. When she refused, he allegedly became violent.

During the altercation, Sunitaben alleged that her husband poured kerosene or another hazardous liquid from a plastic bottle onto her, attempting to force it into her mouth. As she resisted, some of the liquid entered her mouth, and the rest spilt across her body. She said she screamed for help, following which her daughter and neighbours rushed in and intervened.

A neighbour called the police helpline 112, and a patrol car arrived shortly after. However, due to severe burning sensations on her skin and nausea, she called 108 emergency services. She was taken to Civil Hospital, Asarwa, where she is currently undergoing treatment in Ward 4. She has been conscious throughout her treatment and reiterated her allegations to the police.

Police have booked her husband Narendrabhai and brothers-in-law Hiteshbhai and Kalpeshbhai under relevant sections relating to assault, cruelty and attempt to cause harm with dangerous substances.

Police said further investigation is underway, including verification of medical reports, witness statements and the circumstances leading up to the alleged assault.
