PM-JAY golden goose for private hospitals in Gujarat, with 6-fold earnings over govt ones
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) scheme, intended to provide affordable medical treatment to the poor, is increasingly being exploited as a money-making scheme by doctors and owners of private hospitals in Gujarat.
Under the scheme, the state government has paid six times more to private-corporate hospitals than to government hospitals.
The central and state governments allocate crores of rupees under the PM-JAY scheme, but due to the alleged collusion between hospital administrators and corrupt health department officials, the scheme is being heavily exploited.
Under the PM-JAY scheme, government hospitals received only ₹506 crore between 2018 and 2022, while private and corporate hospitals received a staggering ₹2,884 crore.
