With 5,539 organ donations in 10 years, Gujarat ranks 7th in India
Gujarat has recorded 5,539 organ donations over the past decade, placing it 7th among Indian states in terms of total donations. A single brain-dead donor can save up to eight lives by donating multiple organs, highlighting the critical impact of organ donation.
In the last seven years alone, Gujarat saw 657 organ donors, resulting in 2,039 organs being donated. These donations have helped save the lives of thousands of critically ill patients across the state.
Nationally, from 2013 to 2024, the highest number of organ donations was reported in:
Delhi – 28,056 organs
Tamil Nadu – 14,137 organs
Maharashtra – 11,236 organs
Gujarat – 5,539 organs

Organ donation rates in Gujarat have steadily increased between 2019 and 2024. However, the state still faces a significant gap in public awareness.
Experts emphasise the need for more seminars and educational programs in schools and colleges to inform people about who can donate and who cannot, and to encourage voluntary registration.
On the occasion of India Organ Donation Day, observed annually on August 3, a national seminar was held in New Delhi on Saturday, where Gujarat received three awards:
Excellence in Promotion of Organ Donation – Gujarat Government
Best Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre – New Civil Hospital, Surat
Best Transplant Hospital in India – Civil Hospital Medicity (IKRDC), Ahmedabad.
