After four years, the Gujarat  forest department will be conducting the 10th Wild Ass Population Estimation (WAPE) between May 21 and 22 (6 am to 7 pm) covering an area of 15,500 sq km.

Gujarat has been the home to the Indian wild ass, or Ghudkhur, usually seen in the Little Rann of Kutch and areas of other districts including Surendranagar, Rajkot, Patan, and Banaskantha.

Around 1500 volunteers and local people will accompany the forest officials during the census.

The department officials said that a total of 370 teams of the forest department will be deployed for the census, including five members in each team.

The wildlife officials will use drone cameras to help with the count, and enumerators will enter data using a mobile phone application.
