The water level in 103 out of 206 reservoirs in Gujarat has decreased by more than 50% even before the start of summer. Out of these, 15 reservoirs have less than 10% water level.

The constant decline in water levels in the state ahead of summer has added to the concerns of water scarcity.

Gujarat has only seven reservoirs with more than 90% water level at present. These include Sabarkantha’s Jawanpura, Rajkot’s Aji-2, Mahisagar’s Vanakbori, Kutch’s Kalaghoda, Dahod’s Hadaf, Surendranagar’s Vansal, Gir Somnath’s Machhundri, and Junagadh’s Hiran-1.

Among these only the Jawanpur Reservoir of Sabarkantha is at 100%. 18 reservoirs have 80% to 90% water level while 25 reservoirs have 70% to 80% water level. The water level in 156 reservoirs is less than 70%.

The reservoirs which are already depleted or on the verge of depletion include Prempara in Junagadh, Sani in Devbhoomi Dwarka, Saburi in Surendranagar, Adwana in Porbandar, Gadaki in Devbhoomi Dwarka, Amipur in Porbandar, Sonmati-Vartu 1 in Devbhoomi Dwarka, Rupvati in Jamnagar, Kabarka in Devbhoomi Dwarka.

Among the 20 reservoirs of Kutch, the average water level is 47.25%.

Region-wise, South Gujarat has the highest water level in 13 reservoirs with 82.60% while Central Gujarat has the highest water level in 17 reservoirs with 82.14%.

Sardar Sarovar, considered the lifeline of the state, has a water level of 78.45%.
