Water crisis hits 1,500 residents in Ganeshnagar, a resettlement colony in Ahmedabad

More than 1,500 residents of Ganeshnagar, a resettlement colony near Pirana, are facing a severe water shortage. They have to rely on tankers after the local borewell became defunct. The area was established to house people displaced by the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project post-2001.
Despite repeated requests, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has not approved a new borewell, leaving residents without a steady water source. The delay is reportedly due to pending approvals typically processed through quotation-based work orders.
Water tankers have become the only source of supply. Fights often break out as residents, including children, queue up with containers. Many households are forced to fetch water from other areas.
Originally, around 170 houses were allotted in Ganeshnagar, but the population has since grown with the rise of unauthorised structures—a development that has continued largely unchecked by civic authorities.
Residents say they feel abandoned by the ‘Nal Se Jal’ promises, with no piped water, proper drainage, or consistent municipal attention.
