Anticipating the influx of the cricket enthusiasts, Indian Railways has decided to run two special trains for Ahmedabad.

Both trains will run between Mumbai and Ahmedabad on Oct 14, including the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express. For the first time in history, Western Railway has decided to run a special train for organizing a game.

The final decision regarding train timings and stoppages is yet to be taken by the Railways. The train is likely to cover Surat, Vadodara, Anand, and Bharuch.

Those who are planning to come to Ahmedabad by trains on Oct 13-14 may have to face a long wait. Following the India-Pakistan World Cup match at Ahmedabad on Oct 14, the waiting lists for Ahmedabad-bound trains have increased. The ‘waiting queue’ for Mumbai-Ahmedabad ‘Vande Bharat’ has increased to 170. The waiting list is at 50 even during peak festive season.

With Ahmedabad gripped by the World Cup fever, tickets for the India Pakistan clash have already been sold out, hotel rates and airline tickets have also skyrocketed, according to reports.

Reports suggest that Indian Railways may organise some special trains to Ahmedabad as well to mitigate this situation. These Vande Bharat Special trains are anticipated to depart from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra and stop at the nearby Sabarmati and Ahmedabad railway stations.

The train timetables are scheduled in such a way that it becomes easier for spectators to reachAhmedabad just a few hours before the game and get back home again after it is over.

An unusual waiting queue

Usually, this kind of long waiting list is seen during festivals like Diwali, but cricket fans across the country have filled these trains even in the off-season. Trains coming from Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru are also experiencing long waiting list.

The waiting list for the Vande Bharat train for Mumbai-Ahmedabad on Oct 14 morning is 170, while the waiting list for the Shatabdi Express is 55.

Similarly, Delhi-Ahmedabad Rajdhani has 70 waiting in AC three tier and 29 waiting in AC first class. The Ashram Express (from Delhi) has a waiting of 54 in sleeper class, 34 in AC three tier, and 16 waiting in AC first class.

Ahmedabad-bound trains originating from Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru are also running with over 100 waiting on the day.

The cricket fever can be gauged by the fact that for the next five days after Oct 15, none of the Vande Bharat trains have any waiting.
