Passengers whose train tickets remain on the waiting list do not always have to cancel their travel plans. Indian Railways now provides a useful facility that allows passengers to check if any seats become available after the final reservation chart is prepared.

Even after the final reservation chart is prepared, some seats often remain vacant due to ticket cancellations, passengers not showing up for their journey, or other reasons.

Passengers can check vacant seats through the “chart vacancy”  feature available on the IRCTC website and mobile app. The facility provides detailed information about available seats coach-wise and berth-wise after the reservation chart is released.

Many travellers are still unaware of this option, which can be particularly helpful for those whose waiting list tickets are not confirmed or for people planning a last-minute journey. By entering the date, and boarding station, passengers can view the latest seat availability in a particular train.

If vacant seats are available, passengers can book them through the current booking facility. In some cases, travellers can also contact the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) on board the train regarding vacant berths.

The process is simple. Users need to open the IRCTC app or website, select the “Chart Vacancy” option, enter the required travel details, and check available seats. The information is updated after the reservation chart has been prepared.

Railway officials say this facility can be especially useful for passengers travelling during peak seasons when getting a confirmed ticket becomes difficult. It also helps travellers assess their chances of securing a seat even after their ticket remains on the waiting list.

Passengers should note that chart vacancy details become available only after the reservation chart has been prepared.
