Locals of Achhala village in Chhotaudepur taluka have expressed growing anger over alleged illegal sand mining in a nearby river, claiming the activity has continued unchecked for several years.

They allege that sand is being extracted day and night by organised groups using tractors, causing environmental damage and disruption to village life. They further claim that those who raise objections are being threatened with violence.

Dinesh Nayak, a resident of Achhala, said tractors laden with sand frequently pass through agricultural fields, leading to extensive damage to standing crops. He also alleged that high-speed vehicle movement has repeatedly damaged the village’s drinking water pipelines.

“When we tried to stop them, the drivers threatened us, saying they would kill us if we interfered,” Nayak claimed.

Villagers have also raised concerns about alleged collusion between the sand mining operators and officials from the mines and minerals department. According to residents, some tractor drivers openly claim they are allowed to operate in exchange for payments made to officials, prompting questions over regulatory oversight.

Recently, members of the ruling party in the local municipality submitted a memorandum to the district collector, urging authorities to take action against illegal mining activities.

However, residents say there has been no noticeable improvement on the ground.
