Vikas Sahay’s tenure as Gujarat DGP extended by six months in public interest

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) of the Government of India has approved a six-month extension of service to Vikas Sahay, Director General of Police (DGP), Gujarat, beyond his scheduled date of superannuation on June 30, 2025.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a circular dated June 30, 2025, recommended the extension as a special case in public interest, which was duly cleared by the ACC, chaired by the Prime Minister. The extension has been granted, allowing Sahay to continue as DGP and IGP of Gujarat till December 31, 2025.
A formal notification was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the signature of Annie Kanmani Joy, Deputy Secretary to the Government of India. The decision has been communicated to all relevant ministries, including the PMO, Cabinet Secretariat, and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Gujarat government issues notification
In pursuance of the Centre’s decision, the Government of Gujarat, through its Home Department, issued a notification confirming the extension. Signed by Kamal Dayani, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), the notification reiterates the six-month continuation of Shri Vikas Sahay in office, citing his exemplary service and leadership in the state’s law enforcement.
The state’s circular, dated June 30, 2025, has been addressed to senior bureaucratic offices, including the Governor, Chief Minister, Council of Ministers, and all senior police officials across Gujarat.
A veteran officer with decades of experience
An officer of the 1989 Gujarat cadre, Vikas Sahay has had a distinguished career spanning over three decades, serving in various pivotal capacities across the state and at the Centre. The extension comes at a time when Gujarat is preparing for multiple large-scale events and anticipates complex law-and-order challenges in the latter half of the year.
