Vehicles run over woman’s body for 20 mins after hit-and-run on Gujarat’s Vapi highway

A woman was killed in a hit-and-run incident on the Balitha Highway in Gujarat’s Vapi on Sunday, following which several vehicles allegedly ran over her body as it lay on the road, with none stopping to help.
According to officials, the incident occurred on Saturday night when an unidentified speeding vehicle struck the woman while she was attempting to cross the road. The impact threw her onto the divider, killing her on the spot.
Police said that shortly after the initial collision, another unidentified vehicle hit the body again, leaving it in the middle of the highway.
For nearly 20 minutes thereafter, multiple vehicles continued to pass over the body without stopping, officials said, adding that the incident was captured on nearby CCTV cameras.
The footage shows vehicles moving along the stretch while the driver responsible for the initial accident fled the scene.
Locals later gathered at the spot and informed the Vapi Town Police.
A police team reached the site, took custody of the body and sent it to the Chala Community Health Centre for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered, and efforts are under way to identify and trace the drivers involved using CCTV footage, police said.
