Cash worth crores seized from ex-cricket coach's house, betting suspected

Acting on a tip-off about bags full of cash arriving at an ex-cricketer’s house in Vadodara’s Pratapgunj, the special operations group (SOG) was successful in intercepting a cash amount of ₹1.39 cr.

The accused in question is also an ex-Ranji player Rishi Arothe of Pratapgunj, who was previously involved in cases of betting and fraud. However, when the SOG reached his house, Rishi was nowhere to be found.

His father, Tushar Arothe, was detained at the location with the bags. Upon checking the bags, cash worth ₹1.01 crore was found.

Tushar Arothe was unable to justify the cash to the police, as the latter seized the money and initiated an investigation.

Bengaluru and Maharashtra connection

Upon further investigation, the SOG found out that the money came from Bengaluru, and was sent by Rishi Athore, through an Angadia firm.

It is believed that Rishi is currently in Bengaluru, and currently works with an event management firm.

The investigating team also recovered ₹38 lakh from two other suspects at the location, Vikrant Raipatwar of Nanded, Maharashtra, and Amit Jaleet of Yavatmal, Maharashtra. These two were there to take ₹38 lakh to Maharashtra.

The accused from Maharashtra were staying in the hotel in the Sayajigunj area of Vadodara, and the SOG initiated an investigation there, too. The police have extended the line of inquiry to Maharashtra.

Tainted past of Tushar Arothe

In 2019, Tushar Arothe, along with two others were caught by DCB police in a raid for conducting betting operations in Vadodara’s Alkapuri.

19 people were watching an Indian Premier League (IPL) match live from the venue and were involved in betting through different apps.

During the raid, the police nabbed 19 accused and seized ₹45,910 in cash, nine vehicles worth ₹12.85 lakh, projectors, set-top boxes, and a total of ₹14.39 lakh worth of valuables.

In the year 2018, when Tushar was the coach of the Indian women's cricket team, the women cricketers revolted, alleging that Tushar's behaviour and working methods were not appropriate, leading to his removal from the position of coach.
