Vadodara Fake police scam

In another dubious case of online fraud, a mother lost an amount to the tune of ₹1 lakh in Vadodara over false threats of her son being in police custody.

As per the complaint received by the Vadodara cybercrime department, the son had gone out with friends when his mother received a call, guised to be from a police station, alleging her son’s involvement in a serious harassment case.

In a background conversation, she also heard a voice pleading her to save him, and saying ‘he didn’t do anything wrong’.

The distressed mother was urged to talk to her son, but the callers, claiming to be police, warned her not to make a call. She was informed that they are currently in talks with the victim (purported to be a girl), “things would worsen” and Saaheb (a senior police officer) would be upset if she disconnected the call or discussed it with anyone.

Later, she was asked to transfer ₹20,000 to the senior officer, ensuring that things would be resolved. After some time of her transferring this amount, she was asked to make an additional payment of ₹60,000, as “the senior officer and the victim are not convinced yet”. The worried mother transferred this amount as well.

The perpetrator further went on to demand a transaction of ₹20,000 over the formal share of another senior officer, which was transferred as well.

After paying a total of ₹1 lakh, the mother grew suspicious and eventually made the call to her son, who picked it up immediately and denied facing any such incident.

Over this, the mother lodged a formal complaint with the cybercrime department.
