Uttarayan turns fatal for six in Gujarat, several injured

One from Ahmedabad dies while 54 suffer injuries

The festival of Uttarayan cast a shadow over many families as the joy of the festival brought distress, injuries, and deaths in Gujarat.

At least six people died in Uttarayan-related incidents in two days. The state saw a rise in emergency cases this year as compared to last year.

Tragic demises

In Ahmedabad’s Chandlodiya area, a 13-year-old died through an electric shock while trying to remove a kite from a high-tension electric wire.

A 7-year-old child riding pillion on his father’s bike died after a Chinese manja slit his neck.

Another from Bhavnagar met with a similar fate when a 42-year-old died after a manja slit his throat when he was riding a motorcycle on the Rajkot-Bhavnagar road.

Similarly in Bhavnagar, two brothers suffered an electric shock when they were trying to entangle a kite from an electric wire with an iron rod. 17-year-old Sunil Sarvaiya and 14-year-old Arun were shifted to the hospital. Sunil survived the shock however Arun was declared dead on arrival. 

In Vadodara’s Waghodia area, a 21-year-old died due to the deadly manja. Whereas in Dahod, a 10-year-old boy was electrocuted while trying to remove a kite from an electric wire.

A couple in Surat were travelling on Pal Road near Galaxy Circle on Jan 15. 53-year-old Tina Vasava, wife of Goman Vasava, who was riding a pillion on his bike, died due to a head injury during an accident that occurred due to manja.

As per the EMRI 108 service data, a total of 513 Uttarayan-related incidents were reported in Gujarat.

A total of 911 road accidents were reported in two days, and over 115 injuries were reported across the state. Cases of physical assault cases in the state were reported at 344, which is 240% higher than normal.
