A bridge pillar collapsed in the coastal village of Umarsadi Machhiwad in the Pardi district of Valsad today.

The bridge was constructed at the cost of ₹80 crore to attract tourists and develop a tourist point, modelled after Ahmedabad’s Atal Bridge.

As soon as the incident was reported, officials rushed to the scene. It is suspected that the collapse was caused by coastal erosion.

The construction of the coastal bridge (walkway) was underway through an agency, but it was halted after 50% completion for unspecified reasons. The sudden pillar collapse of the bridge has caused a stir among locals.

The officials assessed the situation and it is suspected that coastal erosion and heavy rains contributed to the collapse. The administration is expected to conduct an impartial investigation into how the incident occurred. If negligence or the use of substandard materials is found to be a factor, strict action against those responsible will be necessary.
