Victim Nathusingh Rathod

A 55-year-old man died after allegedly being pushed by two unidentified men near Valinath Chowk in Memnagar late on Monday evening. The Gujarat University police have launched an investigation after registering a case of accidental death, even as CCTV footage from the area captured two suspects fleeing the scene moments after the incident.

The deceased, identified as Nathusingh Rathod, was employed with a private travel booking agency in Ahmedabad. According to police officials, Rathod was reportedly returning home from work when he got into an argument with two men near Valinath Chowk. During the altercation, one of the men allegedly pushed him, causing Rathod to fall to the ground and sustain injuries.

“Rathod was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The body has been sent for postmortem to determine the exact cause of death,” said Inspector S R Bhava of Gujarat University police station.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the two suspects, believed to be in their early thirties, were observed loitering in the area before the incident. Police have obtained CCTV footage from nearby shops and traffic cameras showing the duo pushing Rathod and then fleeing on foot. “We have identified two men from the footage and are making efforts to trace them. Once the medical report is received, we will decide on further legal action,” Inspector Bhava added.

Following the incident, tensions flared in the area on Tuesday morning when Rathod’s family members, accompanied by residents, brought his body to the police station, demanding swift action against the accused. The family alleged that the push was deliberate and has sought charges of culpable homicide.

Police officials, however, said they are awaiting the postmortem report to confirm whether Rathod died due to internal injuries sustained in the fall or any other medical condition. “The cause of death is yet to be established. We will register a detailed FIR once the report is received,” said a senior police officer.

Rathod lived with his family in the Memnagar area and had been working in the travel booking business for over two decades. He is survived by his wife and two children.
