Two policemen in Amreli district have been booked for separate incidents of sexual assault, raising serious questions about the conduct of law enforcers.
In the first case, Ravi Rajsingh Chauhan, a constable posted at Babra police station, has been accused of repeatedly raping a 14-year-old girl over a period of four months. According to the complaint lodged at the Amreli Women's Police Station, Chauhan allegedly abducted the minor by luring her through social media and subjected her to sexual assault. He is also accused of threatening the victim’s mother to remain silent.
The incident came to light when the minor’s father lodged a formal complaint, following which a case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as well as charges of kidnapping and rape under the Indian Penal Code. Chauhan, who has since gone absconding, is being sought by police teams.
In another incident, Mahesh Kamabhai Solanki, a police constable posted at the Amreli headquarters, allegedly lured a 30-year-old woman from Savarkundla with the promise of marriage after contacting her on social media.
He repeatedly raped her under false pretences. The survivor lodged a complaint at the Amreli City Police Station, leading to the registration of a case of rape and cheating.
Amreli Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jayvir Gadhvi addressed the media, confirming that both constables have been suspended and intensive efforts are under way to arrest the absconding accused.
“The police force must uphold the highest standards of conduct and integrity. We have taken swift action to suspend the accused officers and ensure they face the full force of the law,” further Gadhvi said.
The allegations have caused widespread outrage and sparked a debate on the misuse of social media to exploit vulnerable women.
