In the country that celebrates romantic cinema, many remote places witness brutal treatment and even honour killings of lovers. In Gujarat’s Tadva village of Shehera taluka, Panchmahal district, a video went viral showing two young men tied to a tree and subjected to a brutal public beating over a love affair. Following the circulation of this video, the police launched an investigation and arrested 10 individuals.
The viral video showed the two youths being tied to a tree and beaten with sticks in what is being described as a Taliban-style punishment. The video also revealed that two young women were beaten as well, and that some individuals were recording the assault. Preliminary findings suggest that the beating stemmed from a romantic relationship between the young men and women.
Upon investigation by Shehera police, it was confirmed that the incident took place in Tadva village. The two young men seen in the video are from Mithapur village in Shehera and were in a relationship with the two young women. The couple had eloped and were working as labourers in Mahemdavad, Kheda district.
According to the police, the girls’ relatives travelled in an SUV to Mahemdavad, where they found the couples and forcibly brought them back to Tadva village. There, the two young men were tied to a tree and beaten.
In the viral video, the attackers can be heard accusing the youths of committing such acts during the holy period of ‘Dashama’ fasting. They mercilessly beat the young men with sticks while bystanders recorded the incident. The victims pleaded with the villagers to let them go, even swearing by the local deity Khodiyar that they would not return to the village. Despite their pleas, the beating continued.
