The Gujarat high court has taken a suo moto cognizance case today over two incidents of harassment of students at the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU).

The high court has issued a notice to the university over a news report published on Sept 22.

Victims allege serious crimes on GNLU Campus

The news report, which followed the Gujarat high court’s suo moto cognizance, mentioned two incidents in GNLU, Gandhinagar. According to the posts on the social media handle of ‘all the National Law Universities’, two students from GNLU described the deeds that they endured at the university a while ago.

A queer student mentioned instances of harassment that took place against him in the boys’ hostel of the university and accused the university of fostering a homophobic culture in his post.

As per the post, the student was on the receiving end of the hate persistently as the university lacked “a grievance redressal mechanism”.

In another incident, a female student has alleged that she was raped by her fellow batchmate. The post from the second-year student states that the boy also took her private videos while she was in an intoxicated state with him and threatened her to leak them.

A complaint has yet to be filed for both of these cases; the victims instead chose to take it to social media to register these incidents.

High court steps into the matter

The two-judge bench of the Gujarat high court, comprising Justice MR Mengdey and AS Supehia, took suo moto cognizance over the news report published on Sept 22.

The high court, terming the issues as ‘of grave concern', has issued a notice to the registrar and head of academic affairs at GNLU.

The high court has directed GNLU to take victim students’ accounts while maintaining total confidentiality. If the statements are genuine, steps as per the law should be taken, the court ordered.
