Two Saurashtra farmers die by suicide after unseasonal rains cause crop failure

Unseasonal rainfall has caused severe crop damage across Saurashtra, plunging many farmers into financial distress. In two separate incidents reported from Rajkot district, farmers allegedly died by suicide due to losses and mounting debt.
In Revaniya village of Vinchhiya taluka, farmer Ramji Jadav reportedly took his own life by hanging. His family said he had been under heavy financial pressure after crops failed for the second consecutive year.
In Kotda Sangani village, Dilip Viradiya consumed poison at his farm and died. He had cultivated around 38 bighas including both leased and owned land and suffered massive losses due to recent unseasonal rain, pushing him into deep worry over debt and crop failure.
Police have begun investigations in both cases.
Notably, the Gujarat government announced a historic ₹10,000 crore relief package for farmers.
Announcing the package on X, CM Bhupendra Patel said, “The unprecedented monsoon rains of a kind that have not occurred in Gujarat in the past two decades caused significant damage to the crops of farmers in various districts.”
“In this hour of natural calamity, the state government stands fully empathetically by the side of the sons of the soil, understanding their distress. Keeping in mind the sentiments of the farmers in the face of the widespread damage to their crops across the state, I announce a relief-assistance package of approximately ₹10,000 crore,” he said.
