TVK chief Vijay’s wife files for divorce on grounds of infidelity

Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, has filed a petition seeking divorce, bringing an end to their 27-year marriage, as per reports.
The couple, who married on August 25, 1999, have two children — Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha. The petition has been reportedly filed before a District Court under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
As per reports, Sangeetha, 48, has sought dissolution of marriage on grounds of adultery and cruelty as provided under Section 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Act.
In her petition, she has alleged that Vijay, 51, was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor. She claimed that she became aware of the alleged relationship in 2021 and that despite assurances from him that it would end, it continued.
The petition further reportedly stated that she was excluded from his social and professional engagements, and alleged that he travelled abroad and attended public events with the said actress. It claimed that photographs of such outings were regularly shared on social media and that Vijay neither denied nor objected to them, which she described as tacit endorsement.
Sangeetha has contended that these developments caused repeated humiliation to her and their children. She also alleged that facilities previously available to her were withdrawn and that financial restrictions were imposed, including curtailment of her free movement.
The petition stated that Vijay’s “continued adulterous conduct and repeated social media controversies” in 2024 led to severe mental distress. It added that the marriage had effectively ceased to exist and survived only on paper, and that the relationship was beyond reconciliation.
The Special Marriage Act permits divorce if a spouse is found to have committed adultery or subjected the other to cruelty. The matter is currently pending before the District Court, and no order has been passed so far.
Sangeetha, daughter of a Tamil industrialist, was earlier known to be a fan of Vijay before their marriage in 1999. Their wedding was solemnised in a ceremony that included both Hindu and Christian rituals.
