The Ahmedabad City Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested the driver of a dumper truck within hours of a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the lives of two women, a police constable deployed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security detail, and a 108 emergency service worker near the Hanspura-Naroda Ring road on Monday night.

The victims were identified as Viralben Rabari, posted with the Gandhinagar Cyber Cell and attached to the PM’s security arrangements, and Hiralben Rajgor, an employee of the 108 Emergency Centre at Hanspura.

According to police, the incident occurred when the two women were near the Emergency Centre. The dumper allegedly knocked them down, leaving them grievously injured. They were rushed to the hospital by police personnel present at the spot, but were declared dead on arrival.

Launching a swift manhunt, the Crime Branch relied on technical surveillance and analysis of CCTV footage to track the vehicle’s movements. Investigators traced the truck to Dahegam, where a team was dispatched. The accused driver, identified as Rupamsingh Shamsher Thakur, was found hiding and was taken into custody.

Officials said Singh is currently residing in the Odhav area of Ahmedabad and hails from Khalilpur village of Uttar Pradesh.

A senior officer said, “The accused was arrested within hours of the accident after our team tracked him down through surveillance inputs. Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events leading to the crash, and whether the accused was intoxicated state or not.”
