Traffic disruptions to continue till 2027 as multiple bridge projects progress across Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad residents are likely to face sustained traffic disruptions over the next two years as flyover and bridge works continue simultaneously at several key junctions, including Asarwa, Sarangpur and Old Vadaj. Projects currently underway or in the pipeline are collectively valued at several hundred crore rupees, with some major works scheduled for completion only by late 2027.
Major reconstructions at Asarwa, Sarangpur and Subhash Bridge
Flyover and bridge construction is in progress at Asarwa, Sarangpur and Old Vadaj at an overall cost of about ₹330 crore. The Asarwa and Sarangpur bridges are currently being reconstructed, while the superstructure of Subhash Bridge is set to be demolished and rebuilt at an estimated cost of ₹110 crore.
In the Asarwa area alone, three new bridges are being constructed as part of the larger reconstruction plan. This work is expected to continue until December 2027, indicating prolonged traffic diversions and congestion in surrounding localities.
Sources say, work worth ₹89.83 crore has been awarded to APC Buildcon Pvt. Ltd., with the Asarwa bridge reconstruction scheduled for completion by June 2026, even as ancillary works extend beyond that date.
Sarangpur bridge to be followed by Kalupur reconstruction
The Sarangpur Railway Overbridge is being reconstructed at a cost of ₹113.25 crore. While the main bridge work is being executed by the assigned contractor, the approach road portion is being handled by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
Once the Sarangpur bridge project is completed, the reconstruction of the Kalupur Bridge is expected to begin, adding to the sequence of long-term traffic disruptions in the eastern part of the city.
Old Vadaj flyover targeted for 2026 completion
At Old Vadaj Junction, a flyover is under construction at a cost of ₹128 crore. The work has been awarded to Rachana Construction, and the civic body has instructed the contractor to complete the project by May 2026.
The junction is a major traffic node in the western part of Ahmedabad, and commuters are already reporting congestion and delays due to ongoing construction activity and diversions.
Short-term repairs underway on three bridges
Separately, repair work is being carried out on Jivraj Mehta Bridge, Nathalal Jhagda Bridge and Chandrabaga Bridge at a combined cost of ₹3 crore. These repairs are expected to be completed within 15 days and are not part of the longer-term reconstruction projects.
Poor approach roads add to commuter woes
With multiple bridge projects underway across different zones, approach roads near construction sites are reported to be in poor condition. Motorists are often forced to navigate uneven and damaged stretches, worsening congestion and raising safety concerns.
Despite the inconvenience faced by daily commuters, the Bridge Project Department is yet to take adequate notice of the deteriorating condition of these access roads, according to residents and regular road users.
