An elderly trader from Sardarnagar has filed a police complaint alleging that gold and diamond jewellery worth nearly ₹1.9 lakh was stolen from his residence in Hansol while domestic workers were present in the house.

Vishnubhai Jawaharlal Jaate-Pariani (69), a businessman residing in Swami Sarvanand Society in Hansol, stated in his complaint that the theft occurred between 12 noon and 3 pm on March 16.

Vishnubhai, who runs a trading business at Naroda GIDC, told police that he had left for work along with his elder son as per routine, while his wife and paralysed sister were at home. His daughter-in-law was away at her parental home, he said.

Vishnubhai noted that domestic workers regularly visit the house for chores such as washing utensils, cleaning, laundry and garbage collection. On the day of the incident, the regular garbage collector did not turn up, following which another worker, identified as Bharatiben, who usually washes utensils, undertook both tasks along with her daughter.

“The workers completed their chores and left in the afternoon. When we returned home in the evening, my wife informed me that the cupboard in our bedroom, where jewellery was kept, appeared to have been tampered with,” the complainant stated

Upon checking, the family found that multiple gold ornaments — including eight bangles (four weighing approximately four tolas and four weighing five tolas), two additional bangles weighing around 3.5 tolas, and three gold chains weighing about 3.5 tolas — were missing. Additionally, a diamond ring weighing around three grams and a diamond pendant weighing between 1.5 and 2 grams were also reported stolen.

The total weight of the gold jewellery is estimated to be around 19 tolas, with its value pegged at approximately ₹1.85 lakh. The diamond ornaments were valued at an additional ₹4,500, taking the total estimated loss to ₹1.89 lakh.

The complainant told police that the cupboard lock, which usually requires two turns of a key to open, was found unlocked with a single turn, raising suspicion of tampering. He further alleged that the bedroom curtains had been drawn while the workers were carrying out cleaning work, limiting visibility.

Vishnubhai has expressed strong suspicion against the domestic worker and her associates, all residents of Rabariwas in Hansol, and has sought legal action against them.

Police have registered a case of theft and have initiated an investigation.
