Three prisoners injured in violent clash inside Gujarat’s Surendranagar Sub-Jail

In Gujarat, three inmates were seriously injured in a violent clash between two groups of prisoners inside the Surendranagar Sub-Jail on Tuesday, triggering panic among jail authorities.
The injured prisoners — identified as Yakub
Pathan, Ajit Makwana and Chetan Singh — were rushed to the Surendranagar Civil
Hospital for treatment. Given that the injured inmates are involved in serious
and repeat offences, heavy police deployment, including a police Iinspector,
has been put in place to prevent any untoward incident.
Police presence at the hospital has been significantly strengthened, effectively turning the premises into a high-security zone.
According to jail sources, authorities had recently tightened security inside the sub-jail, leading to the crackdown on illegal facilities such as mobile phones and mawa. This reportedly caused resentment among certain inmates, which may have contributed to the clash.
Investigators are also examining the
possibility that habitual offenders may have orchestrated a pre-planned attack
or even deliberately injured themselves in order to disrupt jail discipline and
secure a transfer to hospital under the guise of medical treatment.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the severe overcrowding at the Surendranagar SubJail. While the jail has a capacity of 125 inmates, it currently houses more than 300 prisoners. Officials said such overcrowding has led to frequent arguments and violent clashes over minor issues, raising serious concerns over jail security and inmate management.
A list of prisoners allegedly involved in the violence has been submitted to the district police chief. Authorities are considering the immediate transfer of these inmates to Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad or other high-security prisons.
A case has been registered and investigations
are underway to ascertain how weapons were brought into the jail and the
circumstances that led to the violence, police said.
