Theft cases on rise in Diwali holidays, police face dual challenge in Ahmedabad

This week will be challenging for city police due to patrolling in the city amid festivities and the Cricket World Cup final

Updated: Nov 13th, 2023

For many, Diwali holidays call for family trips across India and abroad. However, leaving your home for longer always presents the risk of theft. Most importantly, since the trends push many of us to declare our vacation plans online,  announcing your trips and locations on social platforms puts the security of your house at threat.

Speaking of the same, GS Malik, Ahmedabad police commissioner, said, “It is important to only inform your close relatives and neighbours before setting off for family trips.”

Reports suggest that in a large number of theft cases, the theft is initiated by the house helps, or the people who help around the house. Even if they are innocent, the miscreants can get information about your absence from them and use it to target the house.

“Miscreants are getting information about your departure and arrival in the house from domestic workers, gardeners, and washermen,” Malik said.

The city commissioner also said that people are misusing social media and getting information about your location.

He also suggested that you inform the nearest police station before leaving for any trip.

A happening week for Ahmedabad and city police

This week will be challenging for city police due to patrolling in the city amid festivities and the Cricket World Cup final scheduled for Nov 19.

As dignitaries and spectators from all over the world will be visiting Ahmedabad for the final, 10,000 police personnel and 15,000 other security personnel including home guards and traffic police, will be assigned for security.

In the last five years, a total of 97,950 thefts have been reported in Gujarat, out of which only 46,636 were solved, and stolen items are rarely recovered.
