Teacher’s protest on Teacher’s Day
The Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) - Teacher’s Aptitude Test (TAT) passouts staged a protest at many places in Gandhinagar on Teacher’s Day, i.e., Sept 5.
The candidates were protesting the government’s Gyan Sahayak Bharti policy (recruitment policy), introduced for the recruitment of contractual teachers.
They were then detained by the local police, which created a ruckus-like situation on the streets of the city.
TET-TAT pass-out teachers await recruitment
The candidates’ arguments state that vacancies for teachers in government and grant-in-aid schools have been stagnant for many years, which is plaguing the state’s education system.
According to them, Gujarat’s schools have a shortage of 32,000 teachers. Meanwhile, more than 50,000 TET-TAT pass-outs are yet to be appointed as permanent teaching staff.
In fact, the TET-TAT exams have also not been conducted in the past five years.
Amidst all this, the government’s education dept introduced the Gyan Sahayak policy, which will recruit teachers on an 11-month contract, guaranteeing them a ₹21,000-₹26,000 monthly salary.
“The government plans to recruit more than 25,000 teachers through the Gyan Sahayak scheme,” said one of the protestors.
The candidates also argued that this contract-based recruitment system instead of permanent appointment of teachers is unconstitutional and illegal and is a threat to their futures.
