Terror accused assaulted by fellow inmates inside Sabarmati Central Jail, ATS, Ranip police launch probe
Accused Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyed

A terror accused lodged at the newly built Sabarmati Central Jail was injured on Monday after three unidentified inmates allegedly assaulted him inside the high-security facility, prompting an immediate response from the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Ranip police.

According to officials, Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyed, who is currently incarcerated in connection with a terror-related case, was attacked without warning by three prisoners inside the jail premises. Saiyed has reportedly not disclosed the reason behind the assault.

Following the incident, the Gujarat ATS rushed to the jail to assess the situation, while the jail authorities shifted Saiyed to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Doctors said he sustained injuries to his eye, face and other parts of the body and is presently under medical supervision.

The attack has raised fresh concerns over internal security within Sabarmati Jail, which has previously faced scrutiny over incidents involving contraband, unauthorised mobile phones and security breaches.

Ranip police reached the spot soon after the incident was reported and have begun the process of registering a formal complaint. Investigators are working to identify the assailants and ascertain whether the attack stemmed from a personal dispute or a larger conspiracy within the jail.

A senior prison official said that the matter is being probed “from all possible angles” and added that additional security measures are likely to be implemented inside the facility to prevent any further untoward incident.

Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
