Ten years on, residents of this Gujarat village yet to receive electricity bill
Residents of Turkheda and Hanfeshwar, Chhota Udepur, are facing a major issue as 300 residents have not received their electricity bills for the past 10 years.
According to the Sarpanch of Hanfeshwar, they had repeatedly requested the Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Limited (MGVCL) to provide the bills, but have yet to receive them.
While MGVCL employees visit the village for meter readings, the hilly terrain and distant houses have led to several meters not being read.
The villagers are now in a dilemma, fearing that if MGVCL sends them the accumulated bills for the past decade, they will not be able to pay.
The question arises – why has MGVCL failed to provide electricity bills for such a long period? Additionally, there is no record of electricity consumption over the past 10 years.
On the contrary earlier in May, a Subhanpura resident, Vadodara, living in a rented house, received an SMS from Madhya Gujarat Vij Corporation Limited (MGVCL) stating that his bill balance was ₹9.24 lakh.
Upon investigation, MGVCL discovered an error in their billing system, leading to an exorbitant bill. The customer’s actual balance was corrected to ₹1,037, which will be credited to his smart meter account.
Another resident from Riddhi Siddhi Flats in the Subhanpura area faced a similar issue. His usual electricity bill was around ₹2,000, but he received an SMS indicating his bill had skyrocketed to over ₹9 lakh, with an option to pay ₹5,000 in installments. He has been renting out the flat for seven years, and was unaware of any smart meter installation at his residence, highlighting the lack of communication from the power company.
