A 19-year-old youth was caught by Saroli police in Surat for breaking into the office safe of Bera Jewellers of Ahmedabad’s Kalupur, and stealing gold, silver, and diamond ornaments worth ₹3.82 crore.

The teenager, identified as Shahrukhuddin Kamaluddin Mir, a resident of West Bengal, had joined Bera Jewellers only 15 days ago as a helper. Within this short span, he managed to gain access to the safe and carried out the heist.

According to police sources, during afternoon patrolling, Saroli Police Inspector S R Vekariya and his team received a tip-off through Head Constable Yashpalsinh and Constable Paresh. Based on the input, they detained Shahrukhuddin near Sarathi Hotel at Kumbhariya village.

During interrogation, it was revealed that Shahrukhuddin had been employed by Pavitro Bera, resident of Maninagar, Ahmedabad, who runs Bera Jewels LLP. The accused had worked alongside other craftsmen in the adjoining workshop.

On the night of the theft, after everyone left, he opened the safe, stole the ornaments, and fled. He initially boarded a bus to Mumbai but had to get down at Kadodara near Surat and later planned to continue his journey in the evening from Surat. Before he could escape further, the police caught him.

The accused has been handed over to the Ahmedabad police for further investigation.
