Synthetic drugs worth ₹2,240 crore seized in Gujarat in 2025

Gujarat, one of India’s key border and coastal states, has witnessed a surge in offences linked to alcohol and narcotics, prompting intensified enforcement action by state and central agencies. In 2025 alone, synthetic drugs valued at ₹2,240 crore have been seized across the state.
Authorities have dismantled half a dozen illegal factories involved in the manufacture of synthetic narcotics, particularly in South Gujarat. A total of 20,823 kg of synthetic drugs, estimated to be worth ₹2,240 crore, were confiscated from these units during the year.
Over the past decade, enforcement agencies have seized approximately 1.74 lakh kg of synthetic drugs in Gujarat, with an estimated value of ₹13,939 crore.
Official data show that in 2024, a total of 588 cases were registered, resulting in the seizure of drugs worth ₹1,479 crore. The figure rose sharply in 2025, with 980 cases recorded and contraband valued at ₹2,240 crore recovered. The substances seized include morphine, codeine, heroin and methamphetamine.
Sources indicate that Gujarat’s extensive coastline has been exploited for the smuggling of synthetic drugs, which are then trafficked to other Indian states and overseas markets.
In some cases, including large consignments recovered off the coast near Gandhidham, investigators have yet to establish the origin and intended destination of the narcotics, even two years after their seizure.
Ironically, Gujarat is also a leading hub for pharmaceutical production. However, authorities have uncovered several instances in 2025 where illegal drug manufacturing units were operating under the guise of legitimate medicine production.
Alongside the Gujarat Police, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and central agencies such as the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) are continuing coordinated operations to curb the illicit trade.
