Swiss expert reviews Ahmedabad venues as preparations begin for 2030 Commonwealth Games

A Swiss sustainability expert has begun reviewing major sports facilities in Ahmedabad as the city steps up preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and explores a possible bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. The three-day assessment is being carried out under the Gujarat government’s Sports Department, with the Sports Authority of Gujarat and the Gujarat Sports Infrastructure Development Company Limited coordinating the process.
The expert visited the Gujarat University Sports Complex, the Gujarat Police Academy and the TransStadia Stadium on Wednesday to evaluate amenities, infrastructure and long-term sustainability considerations.
Focus on existing infrastructure
Authorities have said the first phase of work involves assessing existing venues to determine which sports they can host and what upgrades may be required. The review covers sports facilities, ancillary infrastructure, sustainability impact and legacy planning.
Across Ahmedabad’s municipal wards, current facilities include:
47 gymnasiums run by the Municipal Corporation
6 skating rinks
5 sports centres
7 tennis courts
5 recreation centres
New tennis courts have been developed in Chandkheda, Chandlodiya, Lambha, Paldi, Nikol, Ramol and Memnagar.
Amdavad Municipal Corporation Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani noted that a large sports complex in Naranpura is operational, with 11 additional complexes planned across Motera and other areas ahead of the Games.
More facilities in the pipeline
Under upcoming plans, 27 new playgrounds will be developed across various wards. Additional sports amenities have been created under the Sims Railway Overbridge and the Ranip Underpass.
Skating rinks are now available in Vasna, Paldi, Isanpur, Raipur, Ranip and Nikol, expanding access as Ahmedabad prepares for a major international sporting event.
