Six people were still missing after two vehicles fell into the Bhogavo River in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district as an old bridge partially collapsed on the evening of Sept 24, officials said.

The accident occurred when a 40-tonne dumper attempted to traverse the bridge near Wadhwan city connecting Vastadi and Chuda villages, despite the prohibition of heavy vehicles.

Four injured, rescue operations underway

Surendranagar Collector KC Sampat said: “A dumper and two motorcycles were on the bridge when its first slab collapsed, leaving four persons with minor injuries. The dumper and motorcycles plunged into the Bhogavo river.”

Apart from the vehicles, some women were also crossing the bridge, according to reports.

Rescue operations are underway, officials said.

The bridge was prohibited for heavy vehicles

Despite the presence of warning signs and barricades to restrict heavy vehicle movement, the dumper disregarded these measures, resulting in the partial bridge collapse.

The bridge, which was nearly four decades old, fell under the jurisdiction of the state’s Road and Buildings Department. Efforts to request a new bridge had already been initiated.

AAP slams PM Modi over bridge collapse

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a scathing attack on prime minister Narendra Modi over the incident of a bridge collapse that took place in the Surendranagar district of Gujarat, adding that it was Modi’s ‘Gujarat Model’ that had collapsed.

“After Morbi in Gujarat, another bridge has fallen victim to BJP’s corruption. Modi ji, last time in Morbi, saved the corrupt individuals responsible for the bridge collapse. Will Modi save those responsible for the bridge collapse this time too?” AAP posted on X.
