Surat’s iron rod theft bust; cash, trucks, goods worth ₹98 lakh seized

The Surat (Rural) Local Crime Branch (LCB) team has busted a network of iron rod theft after conducting a raid at a godown in Kosmada village of Surat’s Kamrej taluka.

The team nabbed 11 people, including two truck drivers and two trailer trucks, and seized valuables worth a total of ₹98.44 lakh.

The perpetrators, in association with the truck drivers, stole the rods from the trailers headed for Surat.

Acting on a tipoff received by Surat Rural LCB police inspector (PI) RB Bhatol, the team raided the godown belonging to an individual named Samir Patel in Kosmada.

The godown was rented from Samir by one Mahendra Charan, who is currently absconding.

When police reached the site, two trailers loaded with iron rods were stationed, while four people were unloading iron rods. The godown was also loaded with a consignment of iron rods.

The valuables seized by the police from the godown include 41,295 kg of iron rods worth ₹22.71 lakh, 68,640 kg of iron rods loaded in both trailers worth ₹39.82 lakh, two trailers worth ₹35 lakh, 10 mobile phones worth ₹70,000, and cash of ₹20,850.

The LCB team cordoned off both the godown and the trailers and nabbed the trailer drivers, those unloading the iron rods, and those present in the godown.

They admitted that Mahendra gave them ₹2,200 to steal and deliver a consignment of iron rods.

It was also revealed that these thefts were conducted without the knowledge of the company officials and owners.
