A police constable attached to the Surat Special Operations Group (SOG) died in a road accident on the Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway near Padra in Vadodara district on Saturday after his car allegedly rammed into the rear of a state transport bus.

The deceased has been identified as Bharatbhai Desai, a constable posted with the Surat SOG branch.

According to police, Desai was returning to Surat from Ahmedabad in his private car when the accident occurred near Padra. Preliminary findings suggest that the state transport bus travelling ahead of him suddenly changed lane, following which Desai’s car crashed into the rear portion of the bus.

The impact of the collision was severe, leaving the front portion of the car mangled and wedged beneath the bus. Desai was trapped inside the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries, police said.

Local residents and passing motorists rushed to the spot and alerted emergency services, but the constable had died before he could be rescued.

A team from Padra Police Station reached the scene and, with the assistance of cranes and heavy machinery, extricated the body by cutting open parts of the vehicle.

The body was later shifted to the Community Health Centre in Padra for post-mortem examination.

The accident caused significant traffic congestion on the expressway for some time as rescue and clearance operations were carried out.

Police have registered an accidental death case and launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash.
