Surat: Mother gives acid to infant son before consuming it, both die

A woman and her four-month-old son from Surat died allegedly after consuming acid, with preliminary investigations suggesting that the 29-year-old woman had been struggling with severe mental health issues following childbirth. 

The incident took place in Satharna area of the city, where the woman, Dhara, was residing with her family in Yogi Chowk area. 

Hailing from Amreli district, the woman got married about a year and a half ago and conceived a four-month-old infant son. After the birth of her child, Dhara had been struggling from mental illness for some time and was undergoing treatment. Her condition had allegedly worsened to such an extent that Dhara had even stopped eating for the past two to three days and was possibly falling into severe depression.

On the evening of June 1, Dhara allegedly made her 4-month-old infant son drink acid, before consuming the substance herself. 

As soon as the incident was reported, locals and the family members immediately rushed both mother and child to the hospital in critical condition for treatment. However, after a short treatment, both the child and the mother succumbed to their injuries.

Following the  incident, , Sarthana police rushed to the spot and registered a case of accidental death. Further actions are under way.
