In a serious cybersecurity breach, the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Surat City Police was hacked on July 1.
The unknown hacker renamed the account to ‘Surat Arena Police’ and went on to upload an obscene video on June 23.
The Surat City Police informed citizens via other social media accounts, saying, “This is to inform the public that Surat City Police’s X account has been hacked... Surat city police did not upload the video of June 23 posted on the X feed, legal action is being taken against it!”
According to reports, a spokesperson from the Surat Police Headquarters stated that they have halted all further uploads to the account and have taken control of the situation.
However, as of Wednesday morning, the X account of Surat City Police is still hacked, and the video uploaded by the hacker exists on the feed.
Meanwhile, efforts to recover the hacked account and eliminate the offensive content are underway. The cybersecurity team has reached out to X to expedite the restoration process and obtain backend logs for forensic investigation.
