Final hearing of Bilkis Bano's plea on Aug 7 in Supreme Court

Bilkis Bano had appealed in the Supreme Court against the Gujarat government’s decision to release the 11 criminals who tortured her. The 11 life imprisonment convicts were released under Gujarat government's remission policy in Aug 2022. The final hearing on the petition will take place in the Supreme Court on Aug 7.

A judicial bench consisting of Supreme Court Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan noted that the pleadings in the matter have concluded, and notices have also been sent to all the accused. So, the date of Aug 7 is fixed for the final hearing in this regard. Abiding by it, each party has to submit the answer in writing.

During the hearing, Bilkis's lawyer, Shobha Gupta, stated that the notice had been delivered as per the order of the Supreme Court. It has also been published in the newspaper so that those who were not present could receive the notice. Senior advocates Indira Jaisingh and Vrinda Grover have also made arguments in this matter.

11 men were convicted for charges of gangrape and mass murder that occurred during the 2002 Gujarat riots, post the train burning incident in Godhra. Bilkis Bano, then a 21-year-old and pregnant, was raped and her family members were murdered during the riot.
