Amid the soaring instances of corruption in municipal corporations like Rajkot’s Mansukh Sagathiya and Ahmedabad’s Harshad Bhojak, the state government is yet to take any action against the perpetrators.

Despite a proposal of Gujarat Vigilance Commission to include municipal officials in the ‘takedari’ (vigilance) committee to curb corruption, the state government has not paid heed to it.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) sent a letter to the Urban Development and Housing Department, arguing that since the corporation is an autonomous body, it does not fall under the vigilance commission’s jurisdiction.

They argued that the AMC has its own legal department and a vigilance department, making the inclusion under the vigilance commission.

However, the vigilance commission had recommended in a letter to the government in 2018 that, according to the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, the corporation officials and employees are public servants and should be covered under the commission’s jurisdiction.

The vigilance commission urged the government to make a decision on this matter promptly. Despite this, the government has not taken any action.
