Ahmedabad’s Gujarat Vidyapith, a 104-year-old institution founded by Mahatma Gandhi, where cleanliness was once high on its priorities, saw a lapse in hygiene in the hostel mess.

A piece of plastic was found in the porridge served at the vidyapith’s hostel mess on Monday night. Students who were present at the time of incident recorded a video of the unclean food, which has since gone viral on social media. In the video, students complained of a large piece of a plastic bag in the porridge (khichdi) served at dinner. According to the students, they had raised the issue with the hostel warden. The warden assured them that more care would be taken in the future.

On the other hand, the Vice-Chancellor of the vidyapith stated that no such complaint had reached him. He added that he personally visits the hostel every evening, but neither the students nor the warden had informed him about the matter. He further remarked that it is the students themselves who bring supplies into the hostel and manage certain arrangements.

However, the students clarified that the cooking work is outsourced under a contract, and they are not involved in cooking or cleaning the foodgrains. Therefore, students have no role in the food preparation process.
